Did you know our beloved bookshop has a vibrant history rooted in a passion for helping Derby's furry, scaly, and feathered friends? It all began with the delicious aroma of mango smoothies at the CWA markets in the early 2000s!
The dedicated volunteers of the Derby Animal Welfare Group (DAWG), always looking for ways to support our local animal population, had a bright idea: a bookstall! Every Saturday morning, alongside the refreshing smoothies, a treasure trove of donated books appeared, lovingly managed by Paddy Robertson, and later by the wonderful Neil Thompson and Margaret Johnstone.
The community's response was overwhelming! So many books were generously donated that our enthusiastic volunteers were soon overflowing – literally! Setting up and storing the ever-growing collection became a logistical challenge, and it was clear we needed a permanent home.
That's where the kindness of the Derby community truly shone. Gordie, the owner of Derby Auto Parts on the corner of Clarendon and Rowan Street, generously offered the "donger" next to his shop. What happened next was a testament to community spirit. With the amazing help of Kim Anderson, Harry Anderson, Mal Mac, and Kerry Leamy, this humble space was transformed. Imagine: a sound floor, electricity, a fresh lick of paint, and new lino – all thanks to dedicated hands. Bookshelves were sourced through sheer determination, and the outside walls were brought to life by Geoff Hendrix and the talented kids from the local school. And just like that, the DAWG Secondhand Bookshop was officially open for business in Derby, Western Australia!
Even with our own little haven, storing the ever-increasing mountain of donated books remained a puzzle. Initially, the homes of our volunteers became temporary libraries, where books were lovingly sorted and prepared for their next readers. Eventually, Elders came to our rescue, providing much-needed storage space.
Word of our little bookshop, packed with literary gems, spread far and wide. Tourists became regular visitors, often marveling at our vast selection within such a cozy space. One visitor even affectionately dubbed it "The Tardis" – small on the outside, but surprisingly spacious within!
During our time on Clarendon Street, a dedicated team of volunteers poured their hearts into the bookshop. They tirelessly cleaned, sorted, and categorized books, and of course, warmly welcomed customers during opening hours. We fondly remember the incredible contributions of Shirley, Helena Robertson (Garth's wife), Ann Maher, Denise Hepburn, Cynthia Smith, Lola Norman, Mary Fisher, and our very own founding member, Gwyneth White, who penned this history. And there were so many more unsung heroes working diligently behind the scenes!
As time moved on, Gordie and Helena embarked on a new chapter, selling their business and leaving Derby. Jason and Sonya Russ became the new owners, and the bookshop continued to thrive in its original location. However, in 2010, the bookshop was on the move again as Jason and Sonya needed the building for their own ventures. Shortly after Kim and Gwyneth left Derby, the indomitable Lola Norman spearheaded the relocation to our current location, right next to Elders on Loch street, where the DAWG Bookshop proudly continues its mission today.
At the heart of everything we do is a dedication to the welfare of animals in our community. We are always looking for new and creative opportunities to raise vital funds that directly support the care, shelter, and well-being of Derby's animals.
Every book bought, every pet sitting service utilised, every bubbly bath at the DAWG-Wash, and every donation made directly supports the vital work of the Derby Animal Welfare Group. When you step into our bookshop or use our other services, you're not just browsing shelves or treating your pet; you're becoming a part of our story and helping us make a real difference in the lives of animals right here in Derby, Western Australia.
